Llandeilo 11/1/20

The much awaited derby between Llandybie and Llandeilo was in the balance to kick off at all with the poor weather.  Llandeilo were favourites off the back of three good wins against Bynea, Llangadog and New Dock whilst Llandybie had lost their last two to Llangadog and Amman.

The game kicked off in atrocious conditions with strong winds and driving rain in the faces of the hosts. Llandybie had the better of territory in the first quarter with good carries from Nathaniel Butler , Tim Williams and Steff Thomas. The hosts lineout was excellent with Rhys Cann’s throwing in in the conditions being spot on. James Tommason was the recipient of the throws setting up a number of driving mauls with Cann passing to Ioan Rees to break away. Llandeilo used the wind to push Llandybie back but turned down a couple of penalties opting for the scrum.  Alex Wigley’s kicking for the hosts was very good always finding touch.

Both sides were solid at scrum time with Dai lloyd and Thomas solid in the front row and the hosts defence was hard pressed but stood firm. One hack ahead came close but captain Rhys Evans chased back to minor. Fly half Tom Griffith put in a couple of little chips for Featherstone on the wing but the visitors defence was sound. One huge up and under from Featherstone came back on the wind but Featherstone leapt to gather again. Dan Thomas led the charge for Llandeilo but Llandybie stood firm. Half time arrived with no score after a lot of hard graft from both teams.

The second half saw the hosts making use of the wind, Tom Griffith pegging Llandeilo back with huge kicks into the visitors twenty two. The visitors were penalised for not releasing and Featherstone took the points. Llandeilo were under pressure with Llandybie driving forward and gave away three more penalties which Featherstone despatched well in the swirling wind to lead 12 – 0. Tomasson was excellent from the kick offs claiming the high ball. Llandeilo had to throw the ball wide and almost got clear but Butler got back to make a good tackle. Rhys Evans and Mathew Lloyd were running at the visitors with Dan Brooks always up with play working really hard.  Llandeilo put James Turrell through the middle but he was brought down by Cann. Llandybie lost Lloyd ,carded for lying on in the ruck and Llandeilo made the most of the extra man to score a try in the corner by Dan Thomas converted by Cai Davies . Scrum half Kieran Williams put in a lovely grubber kick into the Llandeilo five yard line to ease the pressure. The yellow card lasted fifteen minutes with an apology from the referee who hadn’t heard the calls in the wind, but the home side were determined to hold Llandeilo out. It was a close result but the hosts played the conditions better with the driving wind and rain to earn a much needed win. Next week Llandybie are away to Betws.
