Penygroes 7/9/19

PENYGROES   17     LLANDYBIE   17

Match report by Charles Cann

First match up for Llandybie in the new season, a local derby against Penygroes.  With the visitors fielding a young side against some seasoned Penygroes forwards. An early penalty for holding on in the ruck and Chris Powell stepped up to give Penygroes the lead.  Lyndon Davies made early carries going forward for Llandybie and James Tommason stole a Penygroes line out.

From a scrum Tom Griffith popped a short pass to Nathaniel Butler coming at pace to break the line with captain Rhys Evans at his shoulder to score a lovely try converted by Ben Featherstone to lead 7 – 3. Another penalty for off  feet in ruck and Powell took the points.

Featherstone missed  a penalty for a body check on Wayne Williams but another for not releasing Featherstone fired home. Llandybie were getting frustrated with the penalty count against and Powell struck two more to put Penygroes in the lead  12 – 10.  A minor wrestling match broke out but referee chose to only yellow card  Ioan Rees from Llandybie. Penygroes eight A Lee broke down the channel frequently but found Leighton Rees and Lyndon Davies sound in defence.

The second half Llandybie were pressing more, a good run by winger Keri Davies found Cann in support but a high tackle gave Featherstone a chance which was wide.  A high tackle on Davies gave another chance but it sailed wide in the swirling wind. Penygroes  finally made some headway into the Llandybie half and they put the ball wide to winger J Tudor to score and lead 17 – 10.
James Tommason was the go to man in the lineout for the visitors and was excellent in the loose, but from a scrum Jordan Tommason and  Steffan Thomas were rock solid for Llandybie with Rees feeding Griffith and Rhys Evans finding full back Wayne Williams on the burst to break clean through for a brilliant try which Featherstone converted to tie the scores.

Llandybie were making it difficult for Penygroes to clear their lines with Ioan Rees  a live wire and Dan Brooks , Tim Williams and Butler tackling well. Penygroes had a player red carded for throwing a punch and Llandybie used their bench of Dai Lloyd, Aled Tommason , Ethan Walters and Connor Thomas with Thomas proving a handful with his pace and strength.  On one break into enemy territory Penygroes had a late penalty which Powell hit just wide and Llandybie had a penalty on time but Featherstone’s effort just dipped under the bar.

Honours even with Llandybie having the better second half and were pleased with the efforts of their young side.

Next week Llandybie entertain Amman Utd.
