GRangemouth 2/2/2018

LLANDYBIE   26  GRANGEMOUTH  14

Grangemouth travelled down from Scotland to play this yearly fixture now into its sixth decade. The visitors to their credit had two over fifties in their ranks to ensure the fixture was played. Llandybie on the other hand were missing a lot of players so it was a chance for their squad members to shine.

The hosts got off to a bright start  with good rucking by the forwards giving the backs an early feel of the ball with Rhys Evans putting winger Rhydian Jones in for a score. This was followed by a similar move with the same outcome with Jones scoring his second try which was converted by Lee Davies to take a twelve nil lead. Good carries by Ethan Walters and Matthew Meredith kept the momentum going but the Scots turned the ball over and a quick break put Stuart Allan away to score under the posts converted by Gordon Cauldwell, so it was game on with the Scots warming to the task. They exerted a period of pressure with good tackling from Mike Tench and Merlin McClelland holding up the play. Half time arrived with the score at 12 points to  7.                                                                                                                                                 James Tommason did well in the line outs for the hosts from hooker Rhys Cann’s throws and from another ruck  full back Alex Wigley came into the line and winger Ben Featherstone came inside to break through the defence to score converted by Lee Davies. Grangemouth fought back and again Stuart Allan  sprinted clear up the touchline evading a couple of tackles to score his second try again converted by Cauldwell.  Llandybie had the last say with a try by centre Rhys Evans converted by Featherstone to run out winners by 26 – 14.                  The match was played in a good spirit with Grangemouth making a good game of it. This was Llandybie’s third win on the bounce against the Scots who enjoyed the hospitality offered by the hosts and meeting a few old friends. Both clubs hope to keep the fixture going for many more years.
