Llandeilo 30/12/2017

                 LLANDEILO  3   LLANDYBIE   10

Llandeilo welcomed local rivals Llandybie to Cae William for this seasonal fixture, With a big crowd in attendance and bragging rights at stake, a hard encounter was expected.

Llandybie had an early penalty and fly half Lee Davies found touch on the ten yard line. Hooker Rhys Cann found his jumpers Rhydian Jones and Dan Wigley with the throw and they set up a driving maul over the whitewash for scrum half Leighton Rees to touch down for an early score , converted by Aled Tommason from wide out. The visitors kept up the pressure with carries from Merlyn McClelland and Lyndon Davies and the hosts were finding it difficult to get to half way. Carries from captain Dan Thomas, Rod Evans and Rob Hughes were met with equally good tackles from Shon DaviesWigley and Tommason. On the quarter hour Llandybie were awarded a penalty, which was moved ten yards on after some backchat, but Tommason hit the post with the kick in front to give Llandeilo a let off.

There followed a passage of play with numerous errors from both sides, with the hosts finally making headway into the Llandybie half. Fielding a kick ahead by the hosts left winger Dafydd Nicholas came across field to link with Tommason and Rhys Evans with Dan Wigleyin support but he delayed his pass with two outside him and the opening was gone. Llandeilohad a penalty for offside which they missed and another for a high tackle which was converted by full back Osian McAvoy. Half time arrived with Llandybie leading 7 – 3.

The second period was a hard physical battle with neither side giving any quarter. Good carries by Rhydian Jones and Lyndon Davies kept the visitors going forward and full back Josh Williams fielded the hosts kicks ahead with good positional play. Cann took one against the head and Rees fed the backs and a good run from winger Alex Wigley was halted by a good cover tackle by Glyn Jones. The hosts kept coming trying to find a gap with Dan Thomas being met with a crunching tackle by Cann.  The visitors scrummage with props Dai Lloyd and Mathew Meredith and added weight of Wigley at second row caused the hosts problems all afternoon getting very little clean ball. Every attack from both sides was met by good solid tackles. Llandeilo strayed offside at a scrum and Lee Davies kicked the points. The work rate of the visitors back row of Davies , Jones and Shon Davies was immense and second rows Wigley and McClelland  put in many tackles. Prop Dai Lloyd made his weight felt with two big hits. Chris Powell, Dan Brooks and Ben Featherstone came off the bench with fresh legs. It was a hard battle with all players giving their all and Llandybie deserving the spoils with a 10 – 3 win.
