Nantgaredig 13/4/19

                             LLANDYBIE     22      NANTGAREDIG    62

Llandybie were host to table topping Nantgaredig ,who are unbeaten in the league this year and should win the league comfortably. However this was to be a very entertaining game for the spectators watching with Llandybie fielding a very young side because of injuries. Notoriously slow starters, Llandybie were a converted try down after only three minutes but from the restart Nant kicked to touch. Dan Brooks found James Tommason with the throw,to set up a driving maul , scrum half Alex Wigley to Rhys Evans who put in a perfect cross kick for wing Ben Featherstone to touch down with Ben converting from the touchline. Nantgaredig’s back line wereelectric and scored again wide out after 10 minutes again converting. Back came Llandybie setting up another driving maul and with the Nant defence not giving way Rhys Evans dropped a fine goal. Nant’s left wing was a speed merchant with a good step and a good break by him made a touchdown for the right wing and scored another himself soon after. Llandybie were a little shell shocked with the pace of the opponents but kept going forward. Nant yielded a penalty which the hosts put to touch. Again Tommason took the throw setting up the driving maul directed by Shon Davies to hand to Dan Brooks to score. Llandybie tried to play through the Nant defence with some deft passes from Tom Griffith and some good runs by full back Josh Davies and hard carries by Nathaniel Butler and Eirian Williams. Half time arrived with the score 15 – 24.

Although Nant had secured a bonus point Llandybie were still in the game but Nantgaredig hit the hosts with two early second half tries. Young props Jordan Tommason and Ethan Walters were holding their own against more experienced opponents and from a good scrum Llandybie attacked with a good break from Evans to Butler who almost made the whitewash but the Nant defence broke clear to score another try, with winger Rhydian Jones saving another certain try with a good chase back. Llandybie kept going and a good back line move gave Featherstone a run but his chip ahead just ran dead. Nant’s left wing had a run but was bundled into touch by Butler. With Llandybie attacking Nant again broke away to score a try to break the fifty point barrier. Llandybie lost Griffith with a tight hamstring and Eirian Williams with an ankle injury and lost some momentum. The hosts had not given up and from a good attack the Nant defender slapped the ball down with the referee giving a penalty try, but surprisingly no yellow card. With Llandybie’s injuries mounting Nant scored two further tries to complete the scoring. This was  good game to watch and although Llandybie were outclassed by a well drilled Nantgaredig side, they kept going to the end, but they need to be fitter to compete against teams this good.
