Lampeter 24/3/2018

LLANDYBIE   26    LAMPETER   10

This was a battle between third and fourth place in the table with the hosts needing a win to stay in the title race.  Llandybie started sharply with good early carries from Merlyn McClelland, Dai Lloyd and captain Rhydian Jones. In the first scrum the hosts turned on the power to drive Lampeter back and Leighton Rees spread the ball wide, with good hands  and a good sprint from wing Dafydd Nicholas apart from the final pass which went to ground. The next scrum, the front row, Keenan Jones , Dai Lloyd and Mathew Meredith with the rest of the pack driving on saw Lampeter in retreat with the visitors collapsing the scrum and the referee giving a penalty try after 15 minutes. More pressure on the visitors but a good clearance kick took them into the home twenty two. A silly penalty and Lampeter kicked for touch. From the throw they formed  a driving lineout to give them a try by John Heath.  Llandybie needed a repost and from the kick off James Tommason took the ball mid air and from the ruck Leighton Rees dummied inside and found Rhydian Jones at his shoulder. He was going left but prop Dai Lloyd called inside and the reverse pass put him through the cover to score under the posts, Aled Tommason added the conversion. The game swayed to and fro with Llandybie’s defence staying strong but from another burst by Nathaniel Butler the ball came back and full back Josh Williams burst through to gain twenty metres before tackled. The back row of Butler and Shon Davies were on hand to release Lee Davies who put winger Rhydian Jones away to score in the right hand corner. Half time the hosts led    19 – 5.

The half time team talk  saw Lampeter on the attack but the Llandybie defence was sound with Rhys Evans and James Tommason to the fore.  A penalty for a high tackle on Rees and Lee Davies found touch forty yards upfield. Another high tackle on Butler saw a yellow card for Lampeter. With Llandybie on the attack on halfway a delicate chip by Lee Davies was gathered off his toes by centre Rhys Evans to sprint 30 yards to score a lovely try converted by Aled Tommason to gain their bonus point . With a healthy lead the coaches made some changes with Alex Comey, Dan Brooks , Alex Wigley and Josh Cranfield  joining the action. Lampeter had not given up and scored another try from close in near the end by Huw Thomas. The next two games against Nantgaredig at home and league leaders Bynea away could well define Llandybie’s season.
