New Dock Stars - 4/11/17

NEW DOCK STARS    5     LLANDYBIE   15

Llandybie travelled to St George playing field for this Division 3 West B fixture. They were expecting a tough encounter especially up front. The visitors lost second row Layton Davies with a twisted knee in the warm up. For the first ten minutes it was nip and tuck with defences to the fore.  Llandybie welcomed back  scrum half Tom Griffith after a season and a half of injuries and his service from the base of the scrum made a big difference. Some strong carries by Josh Powell  and Rhys Cann took Llandybie into the home twenty two and quick recycling put centre Rhys Evans in space and he pinned his ears back to make the corner.  A good scrummage yielded a penalty for the hosts but the kick was missed. With New Dock pushing forward good tackling by winger Alex Wigley brought a home surge to a halt. The visitors gave away a number of silly penalties which the hosts used to gain ground. Llandybie lost hooker Cann with a neck injury replaced by Dan Brooks and fly half Richard Davies saw yellow for a minor infringement. New Dock kicked to touch and from the line out created their party piece driving maul to score a try by K Williams.

With the extra man Dock put in a number of forward drives but the visitors defence was good. Another good carry by Lyndon Davies and a strong run from winger Rhydian Jones  took the pressure off. With a strong wind not aiding the kickers Dock missed another penalty. From a strong scrum Tom Griffith got his back line moving and Richard Davies put in a small grubber kick which Rhys Evans gathered and offloaded in one movement to put full back Dafydd Nicholas in the clear to outpace the defence to score in the corner, Aled Tommason failed with the conversion. Half time and Llandybie led  10 – 5.

The second period saw some good play from both sides and another strong carry from Davies  almost brought a try, but the pass from the ruck went to ground and the chance was gone. Good tackling by Nathaniel Butler and Mike Tench kept Llandybie going forward and a lovely dummy by Griffith gave  the visitors line the extra man and Nicholas joined the line at pace to put Rhys Evans clear down the right touch line and he ate up the forty yards to score again in the corner. Good carries by Dai Lloyd, Matthew Meredith and Butler aided the forward surge  and Tench would have been clear twice  had his supporting runs been seen. Llandybie lost Griffith  with a recurring foot injury ,  Tommason moved to scrum half and Chris Powell came on at centre. New Dock came again but good jackelling in the ruck by Davies gave Llandybie a penalty and Tommason took them thirty yards downfield. With Llandybie searching for the elusive bonus point try, Brooks found Merlyn McClelland to get the back line moving. Dock’s defence was good and a clearance kick took Llandybie back forty yards. From another ruck Lyndon Davies made forty yards with a superb run and with his team mates in his wake should have pinned his ears back and tried to go all the way. From another ruck Merlyn McClelland almost made the line and from the recycled ball  the visitors  knocked on with the line begging. New Dock kept striving but the visitors defence was too good and they ran out deserved winners by 15 points to 5.
