Lampeter 6/4/19

LAMPETER     32     LLANDYBIE    12

Llandybie travelled to Lampeter with a severely depleted team. With an ever lengthening injury list they were down to the bare bones. The first ten minutes was even with Llandybiehaving the better in the scrums. The visitors lost the left winger to injury replaced by veteran Dylan Davies. From an attack by the visitors a dropped pass and a kick ahead gave thehosts a try by flanker James Edwards converted by Sam Whittingham. Llandybie gained a penalty which was missed whilst Sam Whittingham converted one for the hosts to lead 10 – 0.

Llandybie welcomed the return of Tom Griffith and he put through a fine grubber kick to push the visitors into the Lampeter half. A fine leap by James Tommason stole the hosts throw with scrum half Mike Tench putting the ball wide to centre Rhys Evans cutting back on the angle to shrug off a tackle to score a good try converted by Ben Featherstone.               Sam Whittingham converted another penalty and a further break from Lampeter aided by poor tackling gave a try to Sam Gedrych converted by Whittingham whilst Llandybie missed another penalty. Half time the hosts led 20 points to 7.

The visitors were having the better of the scrums with front row of Dai Lloyd, Dan Brooks and Ethan Walters giving a good platform. Carries by Jamie Gimblett and Eirian Williams kept the visitors going forward and a good attack broke downout with the final pass to Rhys Evans too high. Tom Griffith put in a fine forty yard clearance kick to repel the hosts .From a penalty Evans kicked for touch with Tommason taking Brooks throw to set up a driving maul but the hosts brought it down. Llandybie turned down two penalties in front of the posts to kick for position but after a period of pressure the hosts broke away to score a try by Guto Jones to lead 25 – 7.This only served to the visitors putting in more effort, encamped in the hosts twenty two for twenty minutes, with the hosts giving away numerous penalties until the referee lost patience and  number eight Rob Morgan was sent to the bin. Continued drives by James and Jordan Tommason and centre Griffith put the hosts under severe pressure and eventually Jamie Gimblett crossed for a deserved try. With the visitors putting in so much work they were tiring and Lampeter scored a late try by winger Gareth Griffiths with Whittingham adding the extras to run out winners 32 – 12. The scoreline flattered the hosts who were given a hard time especially in the second half. Llandybie can be pleased with the effort with a scratch team who gave a good account of themselves.                                          On  a cheerful note Llandybie Under 15 side won the Plate final in Nantgaredig against Carmarthen Athletic on Sunday by 22 points to 7. Next Saturday  Llandybie play unbeaten Nantgaredig table toppers at home kick off 2.30pm.
