Penygroes 14/12/19

LLANDYBIE    17     PENYGROES    10

Match report by Charles Cann

Llandybie entertained Penygroes in the return local derby after the draw at Penygroes in the first game of the season.  The hosts started with a positive chase from the kick off. The visitors gave away a penalty which Llandybie kicked for touch. From the line out Steff Thomas found his jumper and Llandybie set up a driving maul which enabled flanker Ioan Rees to dive over for a try with Ben Featherstone adding the extras.

The game was very competitive and ebbed to and fro with centres Rhys Evans and Kerri Davies sound in the tackle. Flankers Nathaniel Butler and Ioan Rees were live wires going forward and prop Jordan Tommason carried well for the hosts.

Penygroes yielded another penalty but Featherstone pushed it wide but made no mistake with the next from just inside the visitors half to put Llandybie into a 10 – 0 lead. Penygroes exerted some pressure and put the ball wide to Mike Philips to score in the left hand corner. Half time 10 – 5.

Early in the second half Chris Powell made a midfield break finding a support runner but winger Featherstone covered across to bring him down just short and the ball was knocked on. From the scrum Llandybie cleared their lines with a booming kick from full back Alex Wigley who was having a sound match.  A tap penalty by Nathaniel Butler on to Tom Griffith and a good run by winger Tom Howells made ground for the hosts.

Llandybie moved downfield and a crossfield pass from Kieran Williams and Griffith  found second row James Tommason facing the wrong way but he turned and  threaded his way through six defenders to score a lovely much needed try converted by Feathersone.
Penygroes fired back but good tackling by Ellis Barr and Dan Brooks made it difficult. Another clearance from Wigley with a good chase from hooker Rhys Cann pegged them back. Llandybie lost two players  for off their feet in the rucks although Jamie Gimblett for Penygroes was getting away with it for the visitors and slowing down ruck ball . With two players down Penygroes used it to their advantage to score a late try out wide just before the final whistle. A much needed win for Llandybie to move them above Penygroes in the table.
